Doubtful I even remember how to do the bells and whistles here, but hopefully I'll update this blog with the latest and greatest in my life. Yes, everything old is new again!1

Two Years Flew By...

Well, two more years have come and almost gone. We've made alot of new friends, and sadly, lost many that we cared about - always reminding us of the brevity of Life and the importance of each and every moment.

Our recent trip to Boston, spending time with all three grandchildren and sharing life with our children, has been a highlight. Welcome to the World, Miss Alexandra Rose!

What a difference a year makes...

This last year has been topsy-turvey with a multitude of positive and yes, some negative events. But David and I have come through the year stronger. Stronger together and always appreciative, maybe moreso, of the blessings in our lives.

Children, grandchildren, health and lifestyle. Even as Seniors (yes, it's official!) we learned alot this year about Life, about ourselves and what is truly important and necesssary. We're better people as a result.

Compassion is a keyword for 2010. My work with the free medical clinic has exposed me to a segment of society that needs our compassion and help desperately. For themselves and for their children. It's a daily reminder of the blessings I enjoy each and every day - and the importance of giving back something to the world, that in reality, has treated me very well.

Looking forward to a family visit this Thanksgiving - and enjoying the things in life that no amount of money can buy....

Victoria, Laughing at the American Girl Store in Boston

Well, here we are, right around the corner from the holidays. The holidays, by definition, are hectic. So I'm trying to think about preparation now, in all respects. The Boston kids, Sunni, Kevin and Baby Victoria, will be arriving soon. Their room needs to be ready, our calendars need to be cleared and all the preparations for a memorable Thanksgiving dinner need to be in place. The more I can do now, the less stress at the time. Organization is always the key!

What a difference a year makes. My mother passed away, Dad was diagnosed with cancer (surgery and chemo complete), Little Victoria was born with an initial blood disorder scare that eventually disappeared. I accepted a job doing community outreach for a free medical clinic. All major changes in our lives with the stress that change brings.

The family is healthy and we're all working hard to maintain our respective life styles. Maintaining health is paramount; all other concerns disappear in light of that. Several of our friends did not make it to see Thanksgiving this year.

So, with that perspective in hand, let the holidays commence! And the true meaning of Family supercedes even the best of tablesettings on Thanksgiving.

An iPhone for Seniors

Okay, so I'm as techie as the next sixty year old - maybe even a bit more, with a Facebook page and a home network. But having recently acquired an iPhone, I realize how truly removed I've been from today's technology.

The features on this phone boggle my mind. Wait, I can't call it a 'phone.' It's a 'wireless device' that has phone capability. Contacts, calendar, internet access, picking mail from several different email servers, taking pictures, texting with a QWERTY keyboard, posting pictures to Facebook, emailing pictures, iPod capability to view videos, listen to music, podcasts...on and on. I've only just scratched the surface and am told there are thousands of 'apps' for the iPhone.

Where have I been these last few years that all this technology has moved so quickly from conception to mass production? It's almost embarassing that I've been so out of it, that the capabilities of this device actually shock me! So, let's hear it for us Seniors, who remember the high tech days of the pager and the 'brick' mobile phone. And consider ourselves fortunate to partake and enjoy ~ even if it does take me five minutes to figure out how to answer a call!

Retirement, Redefined...

Everything 'they' said is true, I'm busier now, in 'retirement' than ever before. I counted five (seriously) efforts that take my time, and hopefully, use it well. Among them are charity work for a free medical clinic, therapeutic canine massage and maintaining an active Facebook page for my community. What do they all have in common? I guess I would say, for lack of a better word, 'helping.' Helping, assisting, instructing~ all things to improve Life. Life for those less fortunate, human & animal; and Life to improve communication that ultimately results in more joy for those in my community. So there you have it. Spending my career taking care of my family and using my retirement to help others. Not a bad legacy, all in all...

A Great Grandpa for Victoria

86 year old Dad has done amazingly well with his chemo treatments so far. His survival instincts have really kicked in. He maintains a vibrant mind, enjoys discussing business, family and his personal philosophies of Life. Today, Sunni, my daughter and great-granddaughter Victoria were joined by my son-in-law Kevin for their return trip to Boston tomorrow. I would say that in spite of everything, Jack, my Dad,is a lucky man!

Pride in My Daughter

Today I'm feeling great pride for my daughter Sunni. She felt it important to care for her grandfather, my Dad, during and after his second round of chemo, following his colon cancer surgery. Sunni and new daughter Victoria, have been staying at Dad's in New York for the last week. She'll remain there for another week. I'll arrive on Tuesday, Aug. 11 in time for Dad's third round of a three month ordeal. Sunni's sacrifice, compassion and sense of duty have not only made me proud, but inspires me as well. The love of family is a beautiful thing...

Never let it be said that retirees are passive! In my new role as Community Outreach Coordinator for the Lazarus Free Medical Clinic in Wildwood, Florida, it's my mantra to grow the clinic with both new volunteers and increased funding!! I'm having a very interesting time achieving these goals, meeting new, young and inspired doctors and support personnel. It's truly a re-introduction to Life outside of my immediate community. The shop is billing the evening as a 'Pet Wellness' event and has also invited a raw food manufacturer to speak about raw food diets for dogs. http://www.rawhealthpetfood.com/

The shop has 'sold out' all available tickets . Twenty-five guests/customers will attend. I've really enjoyed creating the presentation and demonstration of my massage techniques and have been thinking about other venues for my talks. Hmmm...living in a retirement area as I do, there are countless opportunities to improve pets' lives and spread the word about holistic healing and the power of touch.

Family ~ The Way They Were...

It's been a roller coaster these past few months. Stresses galore. Heavy Life stress. My mother passed away two months ago. My daughter's new baby was (mis) diagnosed with a possible blood disorder (thank goodness it was a mis-diagnosis). And last week, my father was diagnosed with colon cancer. And I thought these years were going to be a cakewalk! Balancing these stresses with my own health as a cancer survivor has been nothing short of a daily commitment to living and being joyous regardless of what's going on 'out there.'

But during my father's diagnosis, his siblings bonded together in a way unknown to me in my immediate family. His sister, the family's matriarch, was front and center. His youngest brother also called me with great concern. When I think of my Dad's childhood, the difficulty of raising five children during the depression years, I think they share a 'survival' bond unbeknownst to me and my modern-day sisters. In times of stress and actually, in holiday times as well, Dad's siblings rally 'round with a strength, resiliance, compassion and love that supercedes all my sibling squabbles. Something great has been instilled in this family raised in the '20's and '30's. Something strong, forged in bygone but difficult times, that has emerged as a model for those of us a generation away.

My prayers and love are with you, Dad, and all your wonderful brothers and sisters!

Our precious Victoria Ann Fleming has arrived! We are blessed and grateful for her health and robustness. This beautiful 8 lb. 7 oz child arrived the evening of February 21, 2009 to the delight of her mother, Sunni; dad Kevin and Aunt Lisa. This is our very first grandDAUGHTER, and I'm so delighted. I'm predicting yoga classes together, shopping trips, craft days and lots of bonding between Grandma and Granddaughter. Welcome to our world, Miss Victoria Ann!

Tomorrow is my oldest daughter's birthday. Lisa will be 36 years young. I really can't believe that thirty-six years have gone by since that Groundhog Day in '73. A lifetime has passed in the interim. She has grown into a caring person, the 'glue' of the family, always reaching out to include everyone. She's a born teacher. The Montessori children she cares for, have the precious gift of her extensive knowledge and love.
Lisa is capable of exceling in anything she chooses. College, real estate, advanced Montessori studies...She's quite amazing. She's raising our twelve year old grandson and is doing a beautiful job.
So somehow, someway, that little newborn with the head of jet black hair (Oh, the indigestion!) has evolved into a beautiful woman, making her own way in this world. Lucky World!

The Map on the Wall, A Family Travelogue...

Last night I happened to see a travel show about China and the Great Wall. It brought back vivid memories of my two trips to mainland China. My career afforded me unique opportunities to travel the world. So much so, that I started a wall map to mark my venues. My youngest daughter was entering the business world, as I was ending my career. It became a bit of an international contest, with Mom marking red flags, and daughter marking blue flags. Sunni actually did business in Brazil long before I did the same. She, however, got to enjoy Rio, which I missed.

And she traveled to Australia, a place I would have loved to experience. But I sure had her beat with my extensive Asian travels. We called it even in Europe, but Central America was mine!

Now that she's looking forward to Motherhood, and I'm not traveling for business, we're both content to stay put for awhile. But you never know when that old Mother-Daughter travel competition may start up again - or maybe in time, it will become a Grandmother-Grandchild trip...Actually, I can't wait for that!

Sunday, Sunday...

I really love Sunday mornings. It's a chance to choose my own time to rise and enjoy the day. Just knowing I have no appointments or 'have-to's' always make it special.

The dogs know it's Sunday, too. Just today, Brandee~Cherie put her little paws on the side of the bed, wanting to get cozy on this quiet morning.
After grabbing a cup of coffee, I always head out to the patio, clad in my bathrobe. Our patio is perched high on a hill, overlooking the tree-lined 17th fairway. The view is unobstructed and expansive. I breathe deeply of the crisp, clean air and immediately relax.

Often, there will be wildlife preparing for their day of foraging. Shadows of large birds lazily intersect on the fairway below. Sandhill cranes and countless squirrels abound. Because our backyard is up so high, we have the illusion of being up in the trees. Often, the birds are parallel to our line of sight. There are always treats from Nature to be experienced and enjoyed.

There's a calm here, a stillness that I've felt from the first day we visited this community. For me, it becomes easier to regain perspective when Nature is so close. Maybe my next move will be a log cabin in the woods!

Dog Day Afternoon...

Once a month, David and I enjoy the luxury of having our home professionally cleaned. All the *heavy* stuff gets the professional touch. On that day, our two pekingese get treated to a day on the town! There's plenty to do 'downtown.' Our community is dog-friendly. There are restaurants with outside tables that allow dogs. Several shops cater to dogs and of course dog parks and dog 'supermarkets' are on the list.'
It's kind of surprising, but our aggressive black and white peke has a complete personality transformation once he gets away from the house. He's well-behaved, calm & tolerate of strangers. Bailey lets me try countless doggie jackets on him, and is more than happy go down any aisle we find interesting. He's actually a great shopping partner and a bit of a fashionista!
Brandee~Cherie, our classic parti-peke, is Miss Congeniality. She greets everyone in her path by popping up half out of her doggie stroller. Dogs and people alike are captured by her happy peke face that is in a perpetual smile.
Today was overcast and rainy in spots. Bailey donned his purple raincoat with the fleece lining. Brandee took refuge under her stroller's protective roof. After our usual visit around town, we returned to an immaculately cleaned home. What a treat for dogs and humans alike!

It's All About the Girls!

Tuesday's are very special to me. That's the day I play golf with a wonderfully supportive group of women who have become role models in addition to friends. Tuesday golf is unlike the structured women's golf that is played here every Thursday. Tuesday's are for fun, sharing and connecting. Yes, scores do count. Rules are followed. Every putt is counted. And wagers are made before the round. But this group is special. We talk about politics, health and grandchildren. Our previous lives, too, including career, childraising and charity work. Most importantly, many of these women have already been where I am first going. They are steps in front of me on the path of Life and are generous in sharing their experiences. For this, I am very grateful. It helps me feel less alone in growing old and more appreciative of Life in general. So, I celebrate the Tuesday Sisterhood and their winning ways - both on and off the course! Pictured above, two comely golfers ready to play in last year's member-guest tourney.

QiGong for Natural Healing

I've been fortunate to have traveled quite a bit in my life. Asia was a frequent destination during my career. Once retired, I still gravitated towards many things Asian. This led me to my studies in Chinese Veterinary Medicine in Reddick Florida, associated with the University of Florida in Gainesville.
It was there that I was first introduced to QiGong. We practiced several movements as a break from learning our canine and equine massage techniques.
Our community is offering a six week course in QiGong. I hope to take the Spring class. Until then, I've ordered a DVD and hope to learn alot more about this ancient Chinese healing art. It is much needed, physically and spiritually!

It's Delicioso, Once Again!

Our friend from Port St. Lucie, Yolanda Hoffmann, introduced us to her daughter back in 2005. Ingrid Hoffmann spent the evening with us and our kids Thanksgiving of that year. Imagine our delight when we saw Ingrid and our friend Yolanda on a Martha Stewart segment!
Since that time, Ingrid has published a cookbook that I recently saw on display at Dillards, a local department store.
Although not a big Oprah fan, you can imagine my surprise when I turned the TV on today, and there was Ingrid once again! She was in a 'sandwich contest' with two other chefs. Padma Lakshmi, from Top Chef was Oprah's guest judge for the segment. And alhough Ingrid didn't win Padma's vote, she certainly has ours. Congrats, Ingrid, and here's hoping to see you (entertaining or not) in 2009!

In our town, the 'Cottom Farm' is well-known. That's 'Cottom' with an 'm', not an 'n'. The family has been here for ages and owns several successful businesses (as evidenced by their large home and plentiful acreage). Each year more and more lights are added to the already stupendous light show! This year, the drummers and angels were new. The Cottoms have areas set aside where you can park your car for a longer view. My photographer friend Dave Elle snapped this shot, which includes the reflection from the lake in front of the home. We know the holiday season has truly begun once the Cottom lights have been lit!

Where the Buffalo Roam?

Okay, I agree. It sounds a bit bizarre to get attached to these big hairy creatures. But for me, it's a reminder of what the Americas once were. These creatures stir up images of cowboys, the wide open range, and maybe even The Ponderosa, for us who still remember TV in the sixties.
Strangely enough, for decades, small herds still grazed in several areas adjacent to my community. Hence, the high school football team (what else) 'the Buffalos', a nearby plaza called Buffalo Ridge and many other local 'buffalo' references. But after several injuries (people don't always believe the warnings to stay away from bison), the owner moved the animals out of sight. Now there is a movement to get the animals back into view.
Those reckless individuals who did not heed the cautionary signs, proceeded at their own risk. And no one else is responsible.
Bring back those furry giants! They added a unique flair to our community and are beloved by many. And I really miss seeing them in all their massive beauty.

The Holidays Mark Another Milestone...

This time of year always makes me stop. Stop and think. Stop and compare. Then and now. And the promise of an even better future with the start of a brand-new year.
I'm always surprised at where Life takes me. Somehow, it's never where I thought I'd be! And always without exception, I'm surprised and grateful. Grateful for my loving family and all the beauty around me. Grateful for the health and strength that carries me throughout the day. Grateful for my friends, who are my best teachers, purely by their example.
The news events make me think the world has gone crazy. I struggle to make sense of the senseless. Senseless greed, senseless cruelty. And each day that I can reclaim my humanity, my spirit and my sense of appreciation, is a day well spent.
With a new grandchild soon to make her appearance on the world stage, and a loving, sweet grandson of twelve wise years, this grandmother looks to the future with anticipation and wonder. Still here, still enjoying Life's surprises. Laughing, loving and always grateful for the chance to appreciate the small miracles that bless and grace my life. Happy Holidays!

I Fought the Drapes & the Drapes Won!!
Yes, it's sad but true. We've been in our new home for two and a half years now. Before we moved in, I ordered these gorgeous 'waterfall' Roman shades from a local drapery store. They were handmade with custom fabric that matched my bedspread and carpeting beautifully. Thinking that this particular style would compliment the three bay windows, we splurged to include the continuous loop chains et al.
It soon became apparent that the centre window shade was heavy and hard to pull up on a daily basis. But I tolerated it as other Life Priorities presented themselves. Fast forward two and a half years. Now it is a constant struggle with the center window that culminated in an out and out battle last night.
Clearly, the drapes won. I was SO frustrated that I yanked the chain, continuous loop and all, until it finally broke. I then staged an out and out assault on the drapes in a complete show of two years of accumulated frustration. Oh, by the way, did I tell you the drapery shop went out of business??
So now the large middle window remains covered in a sad and asymmetrical tribute to last night's meltdown. I'm conflicted on what path to take next. My sense is to go for the wood shutters that I should have purchased initially, but didn't. It certainly would have been more cost effective. And for those of you considering a 'waterfall' Roman shade over a frequently used oversized window..Don't and Save Yourselves Now!!

With a new grandchild on the way, and one approaching his thirteenth (and very athletic) year, testing for the sports gene seems a bit 'over the top' even for sports-minded grandparents like us! Beantown...always a great trip!

Of course this trip was extra-special. Daughter Sunni is expecting our second grandchild (and first granddaughter!) in late February. Kevin was in training in Savannah for his new job, so it was 'girl-time' all the way!

The highlight of the trip was of course the doctor's appointment. Sunni's doctor wheeled in a small ultra-sound machine where I could clearly see that healthy heartbeat and precious baby in waiting. What a memorable moment...

We had such a good time discussing decorating ideas, potting plants and printing photos. Her home is so warm and cozy. That beautiful and roomy guestroom will get alot of activity come baby-time!!

Of course two new restaurants were so delicious! Common Ground and Fat Cat were unique and great fun. We also enjoyed a trip down memory land at the Museum of Fine Arts. Yousuf Karsh's photographic exhibit was creative and inspiring.

All in all, a great trip!

Alzheimer's and Dad's Devotion~

Typad blog is frozen in time, and I can't figure out how to fix it, so I'm filling in my blogging itch here on Blogspot. If Typepad continues to disappoint, I'm back here for good!!

Well the wedding has come and gone - It was a weekend to remember! Sunni & Kevin were 'over the moon' happy. And afterall, that was the objective of the whole effort!

I'm here in New York, sorting out my feelings on my mother being admitted to a nursing home. She is in the mid to later stages of Alzheimer's disease. So I'm here for a few days trying to give my Dad the support he desperately needs at this time of his life. He made the decision to put his wife of 64 years there. His affection and concern are almost overwhelming. I think he just doesn't know what to do with himself, other than be with her almost every waking moment. He's not getting the rest or break he needs to keep himself healthy.

He did however, start back at 'work' on Monday. He works three days a week at an upscale department store, fixing the fixable retail items to be returned to the floor - or sold as is. At least, that's what I think he does! The benfits to him are obvious - the few hours keep his mind off his wife's sad state, and put him in an environment of younger, healthy people who work retail, the trade he was in his whole working life. So that's a good thing.

Prognosis for Mom? It can't be good. It's a progressive disease, with little hope of turning back, especially in her physical condition. What will happen next? It's anyone's guess, really. My sister and Dad are looking into a nicer place. That would help, although at this late stage, it seems she's getting the care she needs right there, without the trauma of moving her again. But it certainly would be a nicer environment. Whether or not she'd actually know the difference is a moot point. But it probably would make Dad and certainly my sister happier with the surroundings.

The future is uncertain for any of us. For Dad, it's essential that he take care of himself now. For without him, my mother could not survive.

A month away from the Big Day, and the frenzy is heating up, but in an organized way!! Even after a long businesss career, I am amazed at all the 'little details' that must be addressed. Sunni is doing a masterful job of keeping all issues moving towards resolution, and David is a key component of that effort. He is keeping close tabs on the ever-changing numbers on the guest list, and is Chief Contract Reviewer. Thursday, David and I will be meeting with Terry to give her the deposit and discuss the event details. And the clock keeps ticking....!!!

Lisa's dress altered - Complete and Check!

Of course there are more than a million other details, but things are moving along rather quickly and fairly well...Let's put it this way - I'm still vertical and able to talk and walk at the same time!! Invitation confirmations are arriving daily and the Grand Total could be about 150 people. Fifty for the rehearsal dinner and fifty for the afterparty..But we're 'rising to the challenge' to make this a great day for our daughter and her soon-to-be new husband...

It's Good To Be King (s)!!

Yes, not only did David and Ron sweep their flight at this year's Harbor Hills Member-Guest Tournament, but they WON THE WHOLE ENCHILADA!!

Surviving the three hole playoff for each of seven flight-winning teams, only two teams remained. In a total nailbiter (believe me), David's superior chip clinched the win! The chip was struck to thunderous applause, as the neighbors, in golf carts, celebrated the victory! More surprises were in store for the Dynamic Duo at the banquet that evening. The winners, David and Ron, received a standing ovation and accepted their trophies (which looked remarkably like the Heiseman!) Additional prizes included: golf bags by Cadillac, gold-engraved putters and the prized Harbor Hills jacket, suitable for wearing at next year's banquet. A fantastic time was had by all!

How 'Cute' Are We??

C'mon now, we're ADORABLE!!! Pictured above, Jennifer and I are touring the convention center floor at the Orlando Scrapbook Expo last week. Pictured below, Lisa wants to go on record as NOT wanting to walk around the center with her headgear! We three had a marvelous time, taking a 90 minute class as well as checking out all the exhibits had to offer. New album styles, tools and stamps will all add to our creativity in our shared hobby.

Hard to believe that a full year has gone by, since David and his longtime friend Ron played 'lights out' at last year's Member-Guest tourney in Harbor Hills. But here it is again, and the Terrific Twosome will be defending their Second Place title, and vieing for First Place this year. The tourney is played Friday and Saturday, March 28 and 29th with a Thursday practice round. Saturday night culminates in a big bash with terrific prizes and trophies. I'm getting my party dress ready and a new spot on the credenza for a crystal cup! Pictured above are last year's triumphant winners!

We heard from Sunni today, and thankfully, she's made it to her destination safely. She's off to work at the factory, but did manage to relax at her hotel...The Sofitel Royal Lagoon Hotel in Dongguan, China. The luxury hotel features a business center, concierge services, Internet access, car rental service and for the sports-minded guest~ a golf course, basketball facilities, tennis courts and a jogging track. She's sure to take advantage of all the spa facilities, with a mani-pedi during her stay. Okay, so we work hard! But we play hard, too!

Canine Massage, Chinese Style!

I had the first opportunity to incorporate some new acupressure techniques in today's canine massage. Beau is a mixed breed rescue that Elizabeth adopted from Houndhaven. Houndhaven is located in Mineola, Florida near Orlando. I've volunteered at their events and been extremely impressed by their facility, philosophy and honest concern for large, hard-to-place dogs. So it was a treat for me to work on shy and timid Beau (pictured on the left). Beau's 'brother' Buddy, wanted to get in on the massage, so Elizabeth showered affection on Buddy while Beau got his acupressure. Within minutes, Beau relaxed and let me show Elizabeth some healing strokes. We all were energized and feeling great at the end of the session. Elizabeth is interested in my 'Doggie Party Package' for doggie birthday parties and will be in touch soon!

Despite poor weather in both Boston and her connection city of Chicago, Sunni's flight took off for her Hong Kong destination and ultimately, mainland China. She'll do a two week assignment, meeting with her factory personnel to review each individual customer's product, overall project & timeline. Of course her nervous Mom will feel much better once the trip is over and she's once again on US soil. Renting out her condo, moving to a new home and planning a wedding rounds out the busy life of our youngest daughter! My certification course has officially ended, but my journey into Chinese Veterinary Medicine has just begun. Every day of instruction was a jewel in my life introducing me to Chinese philosophy and animal care. Restorative techniques including acupuncture and tui na (Chinese acupressure using meridian concepts) were taught by holistic vets who are professors at the renowned University of Florida Veterinary School. 'Wet labs' using both horses and dogs to practice, were highlights of the week. Also included were Tai Chi & QiGong movements. This has been a week of life-changing experiences, including networking with both veterinarians and students from all over the world who are now contacts and friends for life. Okay, so it's only been forty years since the last time I sat in a classroom environment for nine hours. But, with hourly breaks and a lovely catered lunch, I survived my first day at the Chi Institute in Reddick, Florida. The sheer 'ton-age' of philosophical, historical and application-oriented information was truly mind-boggling. Tomorrow, eight greyhounds will join us for practice in accupuressure. Props to my loving husband who is taking time out of his life to drive me to and fro for all but one day.

Well, not really, but it sure seems that way to me! David rented this Chevy Trailblazer (complete with North Carolina license plate!) to take me up to Gainesville for my certification class this week while our Infiniti is being serviced. Of course, my vote was for the cute navy blue Miata convertible in the Hertz parking lot. But I got overridden as David will be doing the bulk of the driving on every day except Saturday, when he will playing golf with his Saturday group. I'm a sports car, low to the ground kind of girl, with luxury overtones, so this Monster Truck/SUV isn't really working for me. I drove it from Home Depot back to the Hertz parking lot to pick up our Infiniti. And I felt like I was driving a freight train! How the heck do you back up in this thing? It's as long as a city block! We shall see how it goes on Saturday, my only driving day. Meantime, David is happy and we already loaded in some new flowers for the garden. Maybe this "cruise ship" isn't as bad as I thought it was!

Nancy Lopez (born January 6, 1957 in Torrance, California) is one of the most accomplished women in the history of professional women's golf. She won the United States Girls Junior Amateur Golf Championship in 1972 and again in 1974. In her rookie year on the LPGA Tour, she won nine tournaments, and was named Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. This feat has not been repeated to date. Lopez was inducted in the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1987. My good friend Jaye just purchased a set of Nancy's new golf clubs...so imagine my surprise when, at lunch last week, Nancy herself walked briskly through the restaurant! My friend Annette and I were seated at the bar, enjoying our lobster bisque and eggplant sandwich. I spotted Nancy on my left side, and breezily said, "Hi, Nancy!" as she walked by the bar. She feigned recognition of sorts, and replied, "Oh, hi there!" as if she had known me all her life. I'm not overly impressed by celebrities. But Nancy's easy friendliness and down-to-earth presence really impressed me. Way to go, Nancy! I may even consider your clubs the next time I'm shopping for a new five wood!

To enhance my current knowledge of canine massage, I'm so excited to be participating in a certification class for TCVM - Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. The class starts next week. The instructor is a professor at the renowned and nearby University of Florida Vet School in Gainesville, Florida. Classes include herbalogy, equine and canine accupressure, acupuncture techniques and more. Located on more than forty acres in rural central Florida, it's an animal lovers dream.

Who would believe it? In our very own home town of Lady Lake/the Villages, a few precious buffalo still roam...Even the Villages High School honors them as their official mascot. Our friend, Ron Steinert from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, joined David for the Member-Guest Tournament in Harbor Hills. This is a three day event, bravely fought in Lady Lake's cold weather in March. The field was one hundred and twenty men strong! Our twosome struggled against strong winds and rain...and proudly brought home the second place trophy!! Frankly, the second place trophy was my personal choice. The first place trophy was too big to fit on our shelf!!

We 'rallied' for Rally for the Cure, a Harbor Hills golf tournament to benefit a cure for breast cancer. We played with Lin & Terry McLeod in very cold weather! Our last three holes were in twenty-five mile an hour winds in under forty degrees. Okay - we're Floridians, so we FROZE!! But rally we did, and enjoyed an Italian buffet at the end of our round. Even though we didn't win the tourney, David won a raffle for two sleeves of golf balls. But Lin was the Big Winner, winning $50.00 from her lucky raffle ticket!! More photos can be seen here. Today was a visual treat. Friend and fellow photographer Neil Toulch, took the wheel and drove to Marion Marketplace. Walking through the booths brought back memories of Itaewon, Korea and Taipai, Taiwan. Odd novelties abound alongside a prolific produce section. Although there were many unusual faces, for the most part, we stuck to taking photos of inanimate objects. My 'macro' setting worked overtime, to help create some colorful images. On Sunday, January 21, our friends the Ellis' invited us join them for a fox hunt! Actually, no animal is hunted. Instead, a bag with 'fox scent' is spread around the woods and then hidden. The bloodhounds lead the riders and their horses to find the bag. This is done three times during the hunt.

It was an amazing experience for us to take photos amidst the fifty riders and their stunning horses. Of course, when the hounds were released from their trailer, the excitement really began! We thanks the Ellis' so much for including us in this animal-lovers Dream Day!

My Birthday Camera

That's what good friends are, better than gold. Our friends Marga and Steve Montanino from PGA Village, Port St. Lucie, visited with us this weekend. This was Marga and Steve's first trip to our area. We showed off our new home and community. Steve and David enjoyed a round of golf at Harbor Hills on Friday moring. We all attended the Chris Botti concert in Orlando on Friday night. Saturday evening, we ate at Isabella's, our favorite restaurant, owned and operated by our Harbor Hills neighbors. A fine dining experience, we all agreed! What a delight to share our lives once again, with two lovely people who are more family than friends. They both deserve the best life has to offer...

Having relocated from South Florida to Central Florida, the cool mornings and evenings are a lovely relief from the broiling hot summer. Our trees and local color can never compare to the Northeast though, where many family members reside. New At Petco!

Today we were pleased that our vet gave us "paws up" on Bailey's tail. It's been almost three months since it became infected and had to be surgically repaired, not once but twice!! He is healed and all stitches and staples have finally been removed. Bailey is doing great. We went to Petco to celebrate with both Bailey and Brandee-Cherie today. Baby Brandee insisted on riding in Daddy's cart. After picking out her toy, we proceeded to checkout. The clerk tried to "scan" our baby!! Fortunately, we were allowed to take her home even though her price didn't come up on the register!

We just spoke to the international agent for Continental Airlines. Daughter Sunni is finally winging her way home from Manchester, UK. In light of recent events, we are especially thankful. Much appreciation to all our friends and relatives for their prayers and concerns. Her flight was four and a half hours late taking off today. She will miss her connecting flight in Newark, NJ. But we are certain she'll find her way back to Boston, once she lands in the US. We can't wait to hear her voice again...

Today was a lovely craft day at Harbor Hills. Jerri Mayer hosted "Greenman Day." We decorated clay pots with a little elf face, leaves and embellishments (harder than it looks!!). We all found the artists in ourselves and came up with individual and creative looks for our gardens.

On Sunday, April 2, David so generously offered to drive Lisa & me to the Orange County Convention Centre in Orlando, Florida. We attended two scrapbook workshops during the Scrapbooking Expo. The three-day Expo was attended by 4500 participants. Our classes gave us some hands-on experience with new techniques. After returning to Lady Lake, we had a delicious Italian dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. A great day was had by all! St. Paddy's Day weekend was a Grandparent's delight! Our day started off with the "Shaggy Dog" movie at the Rialto Theatre in The Villages. Then we walked around the quaint streets of Spanish Springs. All the fountains were spouting green water in celebration of St. Paddy's day! Giving up my three fish tanks in Port St. Lucie, gives me ALOT of time to try some new hobbies. My latest is learning the art of quilting. I've purchased a lovely new sewing machine, and am taking classes with Jan, the Quilting Queen. My very first lesson was today! It's lots of fun and challenging. The best part about quilting is having a cozy blanket to cuddle up to when all the work is done!

A Mary Kay Day of Beauty...

Our daughter Lisa had a Mary Kay "makeover" party last Sunday in Gainesville. She had friends from work and her mom attend!! We all got our makeovers, while David played catch with Danny and read the paper. I managed to get in some good "Grandma Time" with Danny myself, as we worked on his iTunes playlist and downloaded some new musical releases and a few music videos, too!

Dry Wall Never Looked So Good!!

After golf today, David and I checked on the progress of our new home. Happily, the dry wall was being installed. We "bumped" into our building superintendent Steph, and had a long talk and walk-through. After reviewing a few electrical issues, we were promised a sixty day completion. Next on the agenda, is our flooring and then cabinetry. With any luck, I'm guessing mid-May for a realistic move-in date.

As Time Goes By

The most difficult part of building our new home is waiting for completion. The December finish date slipped to February. Now the projection is the end of April (Don't bet the farm!). To while away the time, we're acclimating to the new area, getting our new doctors lined up and spending time with daughter Lisa and grandson Danny. One of our recent activities was the creation of glazed pottery pieces, proudly displayed by the artists~ David and me!

January, Our Birthday Month!

January is our birthday month. This year, amidst our boxes in the rental garage, and "interim" status, we managed to have a blast! David had dinner in his favorite restaurant, Isabella's. I chose an activity for the two of us on my special day: a pottery creation at Amazing Glaze, with dinner at the Japanese Steakhouse to follow. We are pictured above with our original creations. The dishes will be given a "glaze bath" and then fired in a kiln. They should be ready for pick up next week.

Welcoming the New Year

We enjoyed New Year's Eve dinner at a local Summerfield restaurant called Isabella's. The Mediteranean fare was incredibly delicious. A vocalist was hired for the festivities. As we quickly found out (in this friendly town) the owners are neighbors of ours in Harbor Hills! A great time was had by all. 2006 is off to an exciting (and delicious!) start! Happy New Year, Friends!

David enjoyed the expansive view of the 17th fairway from the patio of our new home last weekend. Our roof is almost complete, the air conditioning venting is done and our windows will be installed this week. We take up the second load of boxes in a rental van this weekend. And we will attend the graduation of our daughter Lisa from college in Gainesville this Friday. A very busy week ahead, but full of joy and appreciation! Click for a closer view.
